Ma…Tsing Art Exhibit

By Glenn Camaymayan & Carolyn May Patricio

“The Monkey is lively, likeable and witty. Highly sociable, is talkative and, as a fascinating conversationalist, he attracts a wide circle of friends. Under the influence of the Fire element, he is energetic, self-assured, expressive and truthful, a natural leader and innovator.” These are words from a Chinese Horoscope which speaks highly of the monkey, the animal that is being celebrated this year under the Chinese tradition. People born in the Year of the Monkey are believed to be     smart, flexible and ambitious, and can adapt to the changing environment quickly. Some of the notable people born in the Year of the Monkey are Leonardo Da Vinci, Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Taylor, Celine Dion and Yao Ming to mention a few.

In celebration of the “Year of the Monkey” and our 1st year anniversary, G&C Gallery presents to you “Ma… Tsing Art Exhibit”. The idea for this exhibit was brought about when the gallery owners (Glenn & Carol) and artists (Ben Cruz, Armar Ramirez, Ted Camahalan, Bojie Puod and Waldz Villanueva) came together for a new year’s celebration. The group was thinking of a theme for the gallery’s anniversary exhibit, a few things came out like places, people, timelines, myths and legends but what stood out was that this year is the “Year of the Monkey” and it should be the theme of the exhibit.
In “Ma… Tsing Art Exhibit” we chose 20 of G&C Gallery’s best artist and put them together in one show that is sure to excite  art collectors and enthusiasts alike. Artworks from Lino Acasio, Aldron Anchinges, Ben Cruz, Xander Calceta, Ted Camahalan, Charmaine Cristobal, Jessie Esplana, Sherwin Gonzales, Darwin Guevarra, Melvin Guirhem, Bonnie Jimenez, David Justimbaste, Edwin Ladrillo, Michael Montanez, Emmanuel Nim, Perry Pellejera, Armar Ramirez, Jojo Ramirez, Nelson Ricahueta and Waldz Villaneuva are on display starting February 18, 2016, Thursday, 7PM at G&C Art Gallery Molino Road, Molino 3, Bacoor, Cavite.

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started” – Mark Twain

They say the beginning is always the hardest, when starting a new endeavor many factors come into play why most of us are afraid to put our plans into action. First there is the fear of failure, what if I fail? What will others say? What others think about you is none of your business, what’s important is that you gave it your all and you will have no regrets. Failure makes us stronger in all aspects of our lives. Then there is the feeling of uncertainty, of not really having decided to fully commit to something that will require your resources. When you want something, you have to commit yourself to it, then you become like an arrow shooting towards your goal.

It started as a concept of putting up an art gallery in the southern part of Metro Manila, then came the execution part where we placed the small pieces together to form the greater picture. During this process there were a lot of challenges, but that did not stop us from putting our plans into action. We took the huge task of conceptualization to execution, broke it down into small steps that we can focus on one at a time.

In Breaking Ground, we are doing something that has never been done before. We gathered together visual artists who are well-known in their respective fields, and put them together in one show that is the first of its kind in Molino, Bacoor, Cavite. These artists have been with us from the start, when we were still trying to make a name for ourselves and it is with their help that we are able to achieve greater things. Breaking Ground is our way of saying thank you to them, they are the foundation of our operation.

Breaking Ground will open on Thursday, 7PM, January 22, 2015, and will run until February 15, 2015 at G&C Art Gallery, Molino Road, Molino III, Bacoor Cavite. It will feature artworks of Glenn Cagandahan, Khristina Manansala, David Justimbaste, Lino Acasio, John Perry Pellejera, Aldron Anchinges, AJ Manuel, Fernando Jovellano, Norlie Meimban, Felix Jesus Meimban IV, Angelito Balmes, Waldz Villanueva, Joselito Jandayan, Demi Padua, Jeff Dahilan, Ryann Braulio, Emmanuel Nim, Rufo Bong Sunga, Fitz Herrera, Carlo Talion, Ben Cruz, Oying Madrillejos, Melvin Guirhem, Rey Conmigo, Salvador Sierra, Fred Caedo, Joeyboi Galang, Brando Bati, Oscar Magos and Jojo Garcia.

A visit to the Swatch+Swatch center

By GMC on November 9, 2014

When I learned about the launching of the Sabel special edition swatch by national artist BenCab that was launched last November 5, 2014 at the Swatch+Swatch Center at Arnaiz Avenue, Makati City, my mind was set on seeing Sabel personally to find out if the hype will live up to its expectations. I have a personal connection to swatch watches, plus the fact that no less than national artist BenCab himself designed the Sabel watch really made me feel excited to see it personally with my own two eyes.

Upon entry to the venue we were greated by Ramon Orlina’s Volkswagen Beetle from his vintage car collection, which BenCab hand-painted, has a metal dashboard designed by Daniel Dela Cruz and a glass sculpture at the back by Ramon Orlina. The first floor of the center was filled by BenCab’s geisha-inspired “Sabel”.

On the second floor is a swatch mini museum displaying iconic Swatch watches through the decades. But the main piece is the limited edition BenCab swatch where only 999 pieces were circulated. The limited edition watches (with serial number at the back strap) which comes with a Sabel paper weight and box sells for P10,000 according to the store staff, while the Sabel watch only sells for P3,500.  Our attention was also caught by digital print reproduction of original artworks by BenCab which according to the staff, some sold for P80,000 each.

Swatch Sistem51 watches were also on display at the center which sells for P7,000 each and comes in four colors (red, white, blue and black). Sistem51 is an automated (self-winding) mechanical movement made from 51 components. Meaning it uses your natural movement instead of a battery to power itself. Sistem51 has a 90 hour power reserve, which means you can leave it at home and you can wear it again after 3 days without needing to adjust the time.

I might get my hands on these watches for the holidays (Sabel watch and Sistem51 watch) if my budget will allow me or if someone from swatch might read this article and be kind enough to give me one for free.

Manila Art 2014 was a blast

By GMC & CMP on October 19, 2014

Our Manila Art 2014 experience was a blast. Manila Art 2014 “Crossing Boarders” which ran from October 16-19, 2014 at the SMX Aura, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig was flocked by local and foreign art enthusiast in the form of students, collectors, yuppies, artist and art fans all converging in one big venue filled with fantastic artworks from Masters and Contemporary artists both in the local and international scene. Some of the noted art galleries who participated are Leon Gallery, Ysobel Art Gallery, Gallery Big, Altro Mondo, Galerie Joaquin, Artepintura, Galerie Y, Renaissance Art Gallery, Gallerie Duemila and Gallery Nine.

Upon our arrival at SMX Aura, we planned on joining a scheduled walking tour to make it easier for us to add up to our art knowledge. But as we breezed through the artworks of renowned Masters such as Arturo Luz, BenCab, Fernando Amorsolo, HR Ocampo, Jose Joya, Juvenal Sanso, Mario Parial, Mauro Malang, Romulo Galicano, Romulo Olazo, Vicente Manasala and Contemporary artists such as Alab Pagarigan, Bryan Teves, Carlo Ongchangco, Christian Tamondong, Dominic Rubio, Kidlat, Maria Magdamit, Michael Cacnio, Ramon Orlina, Michael Vincent Manalo, Migz Villanueva, Rafael Arenillo Cusi, Ricky Ambagan, Tala Coloma and Tam Austria we lost track of time. We were simply enjoying every minute of our experience.

One of the highlights of our Manila Art 2014 experience is meeting new artist friends (Jose Hombrebueno, Danny Pangan and Nestor Villanueva) who shared their decades of experience in art and life. Some takeaways from our conversation with them is the current issue of circulating fake arts in the Philippine market, that we should always be mindful on whom we get artworks from and that we should always be conscious of these issues. We definitely learned a lot from them.

Another highlight is meeting painter Romulo Galicano in person whose artwork entitled “The Triumph of Life over Death”, which is an artistic commentary on the victims and survivors of supper typhoon Yolanda was on display at the Gallery Nine booth. Galicano was kind enough to allow us to have his picture taken with us, its not everyday that you get to have your picture taken with an acclaimed artist such as him. It was indeed an experience to remember and we look forward to next year’s Manila Art 2015.
